Daily Scripture
“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”
1 Peter 5:6-11
devotion
Throughout this passage, we read that God calls us into humility. The word “humility” is defined as the feeling or attitude that you have no special importance that makes you better than others. Being humble gives us holy strength and should not be considered a weakness. In verse 6, we see that when we practice humility, we are raised up at the right time. We also see that God tells us to cast all our anxiety on Him. We do this because we know that He cares for us. And we know that He cares for us because He sent His only son to die on the cross for our wickedness.
In verse 8, we are instructed to be alert and watchful of sin. Disobeying God comes in all forms – gossip, substance abuse, hating your neighbor, jealousy, etc. We must be aware of things in our lives that tempt our sinful nature. Social media, sports, friends, material items, or anything that takes more importance over Jesus can lead us into sin. The devil is pursing us each second of the day. We never have to wonder what the devil’s intentions are – it is to destroy us.
How can we stand against such evil? By resisting the devil and standing firm in our faith. When we stand firm in prayer, in God’s word, in church, and in grace, we are able to resist sin. In verses 10 and 11, we see that we are called and that we have the victory in Christ. We are called into eternal glory. After suffering for a little while on earth, Jesus restores us and remains victorious. Through Jesus, we are able to conquer the struggle. Nothing can separate us from His love. Thank you, Jesus!
