Daily Scripture
“And he said to his disciples, “Temptations to sin are sure to come, but woe to the one through whom they come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck and he were cast into the sea than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin.”
Luke 17:1-2
Daily Devotion
I want you to image for a minute that you have a necklace around your neck and every time you sinned, the weight of that sin was added to your necklace. Can you imagine how quickly your neck would start hurting? How quickly you would start looking for support and help at holding your neck up?
Great News, Jesus has given us that support and a warning on how to create this from happening. Not only has Jesus offered us forgiveness with our Faith, but he also warns us time and time again to “watch ourselves” (Luke 17:3), so that we will not have these things pile up onto us or that we don’t create sin for those around us to fall into.
Luke 17:1-2 is a warning straight from Jesus’ mouth. He tells us that sin is “bound to come.” Jesus warns us that we must watch what we are bringing into our minds, homes, to our friends, and our co-workers. Not only that, but Jesus makes it clear here that the younger generation is watching us and that we are affecting them. No matter what age you are, there is a younger generation looking up to you. They see how you act, respond, and treat others. Are you helping to hold up and support that neck of the younger generation? Are you leaving a mark on their lives to point them to Jesus and the forgiveness that he offers to us as believers?
As a Belmont Young Adult, I cannot tell you how encouraged and uplifted I feel by the support that I and my life group has by the generations above us. Rather it is when someone invites our life group to come worship at their home with them, provides a word of encouragement or just ask how life is going. Every generation is facing a battle and sin is coming at them from every direction in this world. Your encouragement and check-ins with the younger ones can be something that helps them move away from sin and closer to God. Do not hesitate to reach out to the younger generation.
