Daily Scripture
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.”
Deuteronomy 6:5-8

When reading this passage, three phrases come to mind. Know His Commandments, Teach His Commandments, and Glorify His Name.
Know His Commandments:
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.”
The first part of this passage starts with a command to “...love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” This then leads to the question, “How do we know how to love God like that?” To which the answer is by knowing His commandments. As we see from the phrase, “And these words…shall be on your heart,” this is much more than a mere head knowledge of God’s commandments, it is a posture and a way of living.
Teach His Commandments:
“...You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.”
Next, we see that this way of living out God’s commandments is not meant to be confined to ourselves; it is meant to be taught and lived out as an example to others, starting with our home. Whether we are young, old, single, married, have children, don’t have children, empty nesters, or widowed; no matter our current season of life, God’s word should permeate our homes and be evident in our daily lives.
Glorify His Name:
“You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.”
Lastly, God’s word should be the filter through which we view and live our life. By knowing and living the truth of scripture, we are able to see life, and the people and circumstances in it, through the living word of God. Whatever we do, whoever we meet, whatever happens in our lives, our first thought should be to lean on the word of God, the words written on our hearts, so that we may glorify Him.
