“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
Proverbs 9:10
devotion
What does it mean to fear the Lord? Fearing the Lord doesn’t mean we are necessarily scared of God, it means that we don’t want to disappoint him. We know that when we are out of God’s will, sin, hopelessness, and discouragement come. We submit ourselves to Christ and follow his commandments, because we want to honor and bring glory to him.
We see in this verse that when we fear the Lord, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding follow. Wisdom is the acquired ability of applying knowledge rightly in our lives. It is the skill in the art of Godly living. We gain this knowledge by staying in the word, praying for understanding, and asking God to reveal his truths to us. Our moral life begins with reverence and humility before our maker and redeemer.
Submission to the Lord is foundational to the attainment of real understanding.
