Daily Scripture
“May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”
Psalm 19:14
Daily Devotion
Can you think of a time where you’ve been honestly surprised and ashamed by the words that came out of your mouth? Maybe you were in a heated argument and you said something truly hateful. It could’ve been a time where you were gossiping with friends and insults were flowing effortlessly from your mouth. Maybe you hit your funny bone and a curse word slipped. We can all look back and find ourselves guilty of any of this. Sometimes I’ll even ask myself “Where did that even come from?” If we are all honest with ourselves, we can admit that the words we speak or even “accidentally” speak are a reflection of our heart. When we store up hate, continuously hang around negative people, or are even around foul mouths a lot, it winds up coming out of us. What is down in the well, eventually comes up in the bucket.
Our world is filled with this nastiness. How can we ever be “acceptable” in God’s sight? In this passage, David understood the importance of an inner cleansing. This is not just a one-and-done. We must strive for purity in our hearts on a daily basis. When we meditate daily on God’s Word, it becomes a part of who we are. When we’re consistent in our prayer life, our desires align with His. God must govern and sanctify our whole heart. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” If we want to be holy in God’s sight and be set apart from those around us, we must protect our heart from evil.
God, thank you for your powerful Word. I pray that my heart is acceptable in your sight. Please cleanse me and make me pure. Rid me of all hate and worldly things. Please help me live a holy life so that others can see you in me. Amen.
