Titus 2:1-10

Daily Scripture

“But as for you, teach what accords with sound doctrine. Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled. Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled. Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us. Bondservants are to be submissive to their own masters in everything; they are to be well-pleasing, not argumentative, not pilfering, but showing all good faith, so that in everything they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior.”

Titus 2:1-10

daily Devotion

The passage in Titus 2:2-10 provides a blueprint for Christian living, focusing on different age groups and societal roles. This guidance is not just theoretical; it is deeply practical and transformative when applied in our lives.

1.     Older Men (Verses 2-3): They are called to be temperate, dignified, self-controlled, and sound in faith and love. This reminds me of my grandfather, whose quiet strength and unwavering faith deeply influenced our family. He embodied these virtues, setting a standard for us to follow.

2.     Older Women (Verse 3): They are to be reverent in their behavior, not slanderers or addicted to much wine, but teachers of good. My grandmother, alongside my grandfather, was a pillar of wisdom and kindness. Her life was a testament to the power of godly teaching and example. My mother also is a tremendous example of a Godly woman. Her life is a direct result of living under the teachings of her parents. I see this holy example in my wife and so many of the strong, loving women in our family.

3.     Young Women (Verses 4-5): Advised to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled and pure, busy at home, kind, and subject to their husbands. This echoes the lessons my wife imparted to our daughters - the balance of love, duty, and personal integrity.

4.     Young Men (Verse 6): Similarly, they are encouraged to be self-controlled. In my youth, striving for self-control among life's temptations was challenging but rewarding. It is a lifelong journey of growth and maturity.

5.     Leaders (Verses 7-8): As a leader, Titus was to set an example. This resonates with my own experiences in leadership roles, understanding that actions often speak louder than words. Leading with honor and integrity is essential to be effective in the role you were called for.

6.     Bondservants (Verses 9-10): They are to be submissive, well-pleasing, not argumentative, nor pilferers, but showing all good faith. This teaches us about integrity and respect in all our relationships, regardless of our role or status.

Application:

These verses give us a clear blueprint for living a Godly life that will be very impactful to those in our circle of influence.

For elders, emulate virtues like temperance, dignity, and faith. Your life is a living lesson for the younger generation. For women, embrace the role of nurturing and teaching, balancing family life with personal growth and spiritual maturity. For young adults, focus on building a foundation of self-control and integrity. Your choices now shape your future character. For leaders and workers, lead by example and work with integrity. Your actions can inspire and influence those around you.

I have benefitted greatly from those in my life who have lived in the way described in Titus. These are teachings that have generational impacts and I pray that it trickles down to my children, grandchildren, and on and on.

Prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You for the wisdom in Your word that guides each stage of our lives. Help us to embody these virtues in our daily walk with You. May our lives reflect Your love and grace to those around us. Amen.
